Changing Your Password
Your wallet password protects your identity on this device. You can change it at any time without affecting your identity, your connected apps, or your keys.
What changing your password does
When you change your wallet password, the wallet:
- Authenticates you using your current password (or biometrics).
- Decrypts the master seed in memory.
- Re-encrypts the seed under the new password using a freshly generated salt.
- Stores the new ciphertext in place of the old one.
Your identity, your per-app keys, and your connected apps are unchanged. Only the local encryption of the seed is updated.
Your 24-word phrase does not change when you change your password. The password protects the local copy of your seed — it does not alter the seed itself.
When to change your password
Consider changing your wallet password if:
- You suspect your current password has been compromised.
- You want to use a stronger password.
- You shared this device with someone and want to ensure they cannot access the wallet.
How to change your password
- Open the wallet and navigate to Settings.
- Select Change Password.
- Authenticate with your current password or biometrics.
- Enter your new password. It must be at least 16 characters; the wallet will indicate strength and reject passwords that are too weak or too common.
- Confirm the new password.
- Click Save.
The wallet re-encrypts your seed immediately. The change takes effect for the current device only.
Changing your password on multiple devices
Your wallet password is local to each device. If you use mwen.io on more than one device (via a .mwen backup import), each device has its own password. Changing the password on one device does not affect any other device.
After changing your password, you may also want to export a fresh .mwen backup. The new backup file will require your current transfer password (not your wallet password) to decrypt. See Backup & Restore.
If you forget your current password
If you cannot remember your current password, you cannot change it through Settings. Instead, use one of the recovery flows:
- With a
.mwenbackup file: Import the backup on the same or a new device. You will set a fresh password during import. - With your 24-word phrase: Use the mnemonic recovery flow to rebuild your identity and set a new password.
See Recovering Your Identity for full instructions.
